New Collection

Sring Edition

This selection from images of more than seventy donors add up to a sort of „Spring Exhibition”. From Béla Bartók to György Petri, from Paris to Brasov, from the the Soviet Republic of 1919 to the great snowfall of '87. Artists’ studios, galleries, trenches, the first May 1st parade, Children's Defence League, a Danube warship, a scout jamboree. Jesuit missionaries, climbers in the Alps, volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. Northern Transylvania, Bačka (now in Serbia), bombing of Kolozsvár (now Cluj, Romania) and of Budapest. New university in Veszprém, 1956 events in colour. First trips to the West, tourists and emigrants, long weekends with backpacks. The best way to fight forgetfulness in spring: Fortepan!

„And pure existence dictates that there is nothing—no love, no bloodshed, no party loyalty, no sexual attraction, no cascade of lava, no volunteer blood donor, no sunset, nothing in which there is life beating, or nothing that is at the brink of being devoured by non-existence but holds on to life tightly still—that you could picture easily without the color red.” The Color of All Colors: Writer Attila Bartis on Photos from the Fortepan Archive appeared first on Weekly Fortepan.

Weekly Fortepan blog

Our blog, updated weekly in Hungarian and less frequently in English, provides a richly illustrated backstory of the photos and their donors uploaded to Fortepan. The Weekly Fortepan Blog is produced with the support and cooperation of the Capa Center. All our articles are available for republishing under CC license.

Previous uploads

Every month or two, we update our site with around 2-3000 images, often mixing family photos of many donors, but sometimes a photo documentation of an author or a company is added to the archive.
